As mentioned in the Bible, Mount Ararat is the cradle of humanity. In the 13th Century, the famous explorer Marco Polo described Ararat as a mountain with a constantly growing snowy peak, and impossible to climb. The first documented ascent to the summit of Mount Ararat was recorded to be September 27, 1829 (October 9 in the Gregorian calendar), when a 37-year old professor, Dr. Friedrich Parrot, together with the distinguished Armenian writer Khachatur Abovian, reached the mountain’s peak. During a later expedition in 1876, while enjoying the view of the Ararat Valley from the mountain’s top, a recognised British scholar and statesman, James Bryce, noted that if it were the place where mankind first set foot on the ground, one could not imagine a more fascinating centre of the universe.
